Lagos Approves 31 Major Road Projects for Immediate Implementation
Feb 3, 2008 - The Lagos State Government at the weekend approved the award of 31 major road contracts for immediate implementation as provided in the Year 2008 budget.
The approval was made at an extraordinary meeting of the Lagos State Tenders Board held at the Akodo Beach Resort, in Ibeju Lekki and which had in attendance the Ministries of Works and Infrastructure, Environment and Transportation as well as bidding contractors.
Among the major contracts considered by the extraordinary Tenders Board meeting are the rehabilitation of the Ago Palace Way , Amuwo Odofin Phase 11 which has been recommended to CCECC and the infrastructural improvement of Yaba (Jibowu) Iddo- Mainland Phase 11 which has been awarded to PW Nigeria Ltd.
Other contracts listed and considered by the meeting are Upgrading /Rehabilitation of Apapa Central Business District GRA (CBD), Apapa LGA Phase 11 awarded to Julius Berger, construction of Okota- Itire Link Bridge and road works awarded to CCECC and a holistic approach to road development in Lagos State Year 2007-2010 to Hi-tech Construction.
Also considered by the meeting are the rehabilitation of two burnt court rooms at Igbosere for Catrillion Investent limited, construction of Ajangbadi –Ilogbo road in Ojo to Seg Mahsen, construction of Ijede- Egbin road in ikorodu to Wetland, construction of Ajoke Sodamola street Fagba Iju to Vikky Enterprises among others.
The extraordinary meeting also considered contracts for improvement of traffic gridlock on some locations like:
1. Former Toll Gate
2. Descent of Anthony Bridge
3. Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way
4. Micheal Otedola Estate Road (under the bridge) as well as the Falomo bridge by Ozumba Mbadiwe
5. Construction of Round About at BillingsWay , Ikeja
6. Improvement of Maryland under Pass (Odo-Iyalaro)
7. Expansion of Town Planning Way , Ilupeju.

Speaking on the importance of the meeting, State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola (SAN) disclosed that it is meant to fast track the implementation of the budget 2008 by bringing all the agencies involved in the preparation of the budget project executing ministries, funding agencies and the contractors together to ensure that ongoing projects are sustained and that new ones conceptualized by the present administration are awarded.
That way, Governor Fashola continued, drainage works, hospital projects, housing, beautification projects and road construction work would progress steadily and enable us take advantage of the dry season to get a lot of work done before the onset of the rainy season.
He explained that the meeting would allow sufficient progress to be made on programmes designed to ensure free movement during the rainy season and also curtail flooding.
In his words: “the extraordinary meeting is meant to ensure that all agencies of government are gathered under one roof to shorten the bureaucracy. Like a product line, what should have taken a much longer period is shortened such that during the rainy season we would be spending more time monitoring projects with varying completion periods”
While underscoring the importance attached to the exercise, Commissioner for Finance who chaired the meeting Mr Rotimi Oyekan told the contractors that the State Government was concerned about ensuring that the state got value for its expenditure in the various projects.
He added that the Tenders board is also interested in ensuring that not only do the contractors have the capabilities to execute the various projects but they should also demonstrate the willingness to deliver the project on schedule with a view to bet6tering the lot of the people of Lagos .
In an interview with newsmen after the meeting, one of the contractors described the experience with the panel members as very interesting, adding that all the members of the panel are professionals in their own right who are striving to ensure that Lagos State gets the best.
