Lagos to Ensure Capacity Functioning of All Transfer Loading Stations

Feb 19, 2008 - Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN) on Tuesday promised to ensure the functioning at full capacity of the transfer loading stations in the State to reduce the number of trucks that ply the roads to tip refuse.

He said when fully operational the new system would drastically reduce the number of trucks that presently convey refuse round the state, but only move them at night with fewer trucks.

Governor Fashola spoke when he went on tour of the Olusosun refuse dumpsite off Oregun road at Ojota added that by improving the state of the transfer loading stations, the state would succeed in reducing the over 200 trucks that daily mass at the entrance of the Olusosun dumpsite to less that 15 which would move the compacted waste from the transfer loading stations at night.

He added that the road network within the dumpsite would be completed by April and that would ensure a quicker turnaround for trucks that tip refuse from all over the State.

He said it is the concentration of the trucks who often get stuck for one or two days that make the turn around in moving refuse daily very difficult especially during the rainy season and gives the impression that Lagos is dirty.
Governor Fashola also stated that the State has deployed waste compactors to the dumpsite to reduce the amount of loose waste that is generated.

The Lagos State helmsman informed that two more waste to wealth plants in addition to the one at Ikorodu would soon come on stream, adding that it would help in making the environment cleaner and safer.

He also directed the Managing Director of the State Waste Management Authority LAWMA to furnish his office with detailed reports about the encroachment which has taken place on the dumpsite.

The Governor said the present government is on course to ensuring that it makes the environment more conducive for the people.

He reminded that the road constitute a resource which must be judiciously managed, pleading that it should only be used when necessary.

Towards this end, he reiterated that the drivers training centres being put in place by the state in five locations would soon be completed and would help in ensuring that the quest to ensure that only properly trained people manned the steering wheels in the state .

Earlier, Mr Oresanya while briefing Governor Fashola, had disclosed that 17 out of the 42 hectares of the site landscape had been encroached upon by illegal developers before the present executive of LAWMA took over in 2005.

The LAWMA boss explained that the encroachers claimed that they possess Certificate of Occupancy which investigations have proved to have been wrongly obtained.

Mr. Oresanya while speaking further informed the governor that the LAWMA is currently building the landfill site from down up in order to eliminate the smoke which combustion of the chemicals generated by the refuse causes.
He said when fully completed, four platforms would be operational on a 24 hour basis while deodorizers that would spray de-oxidixed water would be installed.
