Only Positive Development Of Education Can Make Vision 2020 Realisable - Fashola

Apr 4, 2008 - Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN) on Friday asserted that only positive development of the educational sector can make vision 2020 possible.

Speaking while receiving the Minister of State for Education at the Alausa Oval office, he added that warned if concerted effort is not made to ensure that the educational sector is supported with necessary facilities.

He described a badly run educational system as a danger to the people, insisting that the state is not fighting anyone in the quest to ensure that all substandard schools are brought up to standard.

He said the present campaign of the state against proliferation of substandard schools is aimed at instilling the culture of doing what is right in the people, as education constitute the only legacy that could be given coming generations.
Governor Fashola called on the federal government to invest in universities and other tertiary forms of education as it represents a viable way of developing the nation manpower.

He described the launch of a new curricular for the nine year universal basic education system as a clear signal on the need for the people to use God given talents to achieve life goals.

Governor Fashola said Nigeria has no business being unemployed as skill development remains an untapped avenue to provide jobs to millions of people who could be self employed.

The Governor reiterated that all practices of the state Government has been guided by transparency and same would be employed in the disbursement of UBEC funds to public schools in the state.

He said the commitment of the state government to education is borne out of the desire to ensure that Lagos with a population of 18 million become rich in terms of its educational attainments.

He commended the passion and sincerity which the Minister is deploying into the job in the adding that President Umaru Y'Aradua made a very good choice.

The Lagos State helmsman also called for laying of emphasis on creation of skills in the nation's educational system as only people with skills can make hay in a very competitive world.

Speaking earlier, the Minister of State for Education, Hajiya Aishatu Jubril said the team was in Lagos to launch the South West version of the Nine year basic education curriculum.

She added that from September this year, the new curriculum would be introduced in public schools under the Universal Basic Education system.

The Minister commended the efforts of the Lagos State against the proliferation of substandard schools adding that the Federal Ministry is solidly behind the State in the action.

She also called on States that have not started assessing the UBE funds to start doing so ,but warn that the funds can only be channeled for use by public schools only.
