Joint Statement Of The Standing Committee On Federal Government-Lagos State Relations
Mar 13, 2009 - Following the inauguration of the above Committee as directed by His Excellency, Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’Adua President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; the FG-LASG Standing Committee has met on three occasions with substantial progress being made in the area of administrative and governmental harmony for the public good and interest.
2. The Federal Government has agreed to release to the Lagos State Government the four existing and disused Jetties at Marina; Ijora; Oworoshoki and Ajegunle for use of public transportation in Lagos State.
3. The Lagos State Government will assist in capturing the details of all Federal Government Estates derived from public acquisitions in order to enable the issuance of subsequent title to residents of Federal Government Estates in Lagos State.
4. In support of the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge designed to relieve congestion and traffic on the Lekki Highway and Victoria Island regions, the Federal Government has expressed no objection to the acquisition, for over-ridding public purpose, of the following properties on the bridge “Right of way” - No. 16 Ruxton Road and Nos. 15, 38 and 40 Alexander Avenue, Ikoyi, respectively. Parties with established interest will be entitled to compensation.
5. The Federal Government team has inspected the expansion joints (particularly at Alapere) on the 3rd axial bridge in recent times and found an urgent need for repairs. This work can conveniently be undertaken by LASG to meet present exigencies.
6. The Federal Government and the Lagos State Government will work together in the clearing of abandoned shipwrecks and vessels along the State waterways using LASG to implement where necessary.
7. The old Broad Street Prison will be handed over to Lagos State Government, which in turn will assist the Federal Government in developing another Prison facility in the longer term.
8. Joint Sub-Committees on other issues which are outstanding in ensuring smoother Federal Government - Lagos State Government Relations have also been established to propose solutions in the longer term.
9. Inter-governmental relations and resolution of issues in pursuance of good governance and the public interest is an on-going process. The FG-LASG Standing Committee, whose tenure is 12 months, will continue to work in earnest under the co-chairmanship of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation Mahmud Yayale Ahmed, CFR and the Honourable Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Lagos Statet Mr. Olasupo Shasore SAN, while looking forward to future achievements.
