COWLSO Completes Work On Two New Recreation Centres, Releases Plans For National Conference

Oct 12, 2009 - First Lady of Lagos State and Chairman of the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO) Mrs Abimbola Fashola on Monday disclosed that the council has completed work on two recreation centres, one of which is billed to be commissioned by Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN) on Wednesday.

Mrs. Fashola who spoke on Monday at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa during a Press Conference on the forthcoming National Women Conference added that the new centres are located at Oworonshoki by the mini water works while the second one is at Orile Agege on Amoo street.

She disclosed that the N30Million expended on constructing the two new recreation centres were part of the proceeds from the 2008 National Conference.

She also disclosed that the Council has also been involved in supporting women with various breast cancer issues and Radiotherapy /Chemotherapy and Surgery to which a total sum of Seven Million Naira has so far been committed also from proceeds of last year’s Conference.

Mrs Fashola said the theme of the Year 2009 Conference is “Rethink, Renew and Resolve Your Challenges” and would have four distinguished women speakers speaking on four main topics from Wednesday, October 28 to Friday, October 30, 2009 at Expo Hall, OceanView, Victoria Island.

She listed the topics to include “Managing Public Life”, by Mrs Ibukun Awosika, “Re-inventing Family Values” by Mrs Iyabo Ladipo, “The Woman Politician” by Hon. Adejoke Orelope- Adefulire- and “Preparing for Retirement” by Mrs Alsu Fisher.

On what informed the choice of the theme for the conference, Mrs Fashola explained that at the end of every conference, questionnaires are distributed to participants on what should inform the theme for the next conference.

Mrs Fashola reiterated that COWLSO would have loved to do more especially in terms of provision of amenities, adding that the council is still keen on completing work on its retirement villa located in Lekki but had been slowed down by paucity of funds.

The First Lady added that in the last eight years since COWLSO was reactivated, the yearly conference apart from serving as a forum for brainstorming on women issues has also engendered positive changes in women to be better home makers and keepers.

Mrs Fashola said COWLSO members also make it a point of duty to visit charity homes after each year’s conference where the inmates are usually provided with basic necessities which they need to give them a sense of belonging.

Also speaking, the Vice Chairman of the Council and Wife of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Mrs Mayowa Ikuforiji said one of the major activities of the council is the provision of medical assistance to women especially those suffering from cervical cancer.

In her remarks, the Chairman of the Organizing Committee for the 2009 Conference and wife of the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mrs Gbemi Sasore said the 2009 conference would involve networking on various issues, adding that with the increase in number of attendance on a yearly basis, it means the programme is impacting positively on the society.

The press conference was attended by many members of the council.
