Fashola Meets Leaders Of Foodstuff Dealers Association
…Sets up Committee to examine grievances
Mar 23, 2010 - Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN) on Tuesday met with the executive and members of the Foodstuff and Farm Produce Dealers Association of Nigeria (Lagos State Chapter), assuring them that the State Government would work with the association and all concerned stakeholders to address the various grievances listed by the representatives.
Governor Fashola who spoke at the Conference Hall of the Lagos House, Ikeja noted that in every situation involving human interaction, conflicts are bound to happen and that the challenge is to find a win-win situation to such conflicts through dialogue rather than resort to strike which at the end of the day would neither solve the problem nor be in the interest of any of the parties involved.
The Governor also announced the setting up of a committee to be headed by the Special Adviser on Revenue and Taxation, Mr Ade Ipaiye which would meet with the traders and collate taxes and levies allegedly currently being collected from the traders on the road with a view to determining the legal and illegal ones.
The other members of the committee are Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Rotimi Agunsoye, Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr Enoch Ajibosho, Special Adviser on Transportation, Hon Kayode Opeifa and Special Adviser on the Environment, Hon Sesan Olanrewaju.
Governor Fashola noted that it would seem that there are some people who are taking advantage of the traders by just printing and issuing receipts illegally, adding that this must be identified and stopped as the government exists to protect the interest of the people.
Speaking earlier on behalf of the traders, the Secretary General of the association, Mallam Sheu Usman said apart from other problems which traders contend with, they are forced to pay for 15 different levy tickets made up of five from the Federal Government, six from Ogun and four from Lagos between Isheri and Berger on the borders of Lagos and Ogun States.
